Catawbaís lacrosse team beat Florida Southern 10-8 in Sundayís championship game of the Deep South Conference Tournament. It was the first tourney title for the Indians (12-3) and their fourth trip to the final.
John Sceich had three goals and two assists to lead the Indians. Trevor Sieracki scored three goals. Marty Tuohy scored twice. Michael Pecchia made 13 saves for the Indians.
Catawbaís Braden Artem was named tournament MVP.
n College baseball
Carson-Newmanís Alex Britt (Salisbury) was the winning pitcher in a 6-5 victory against Lincoln Memorial on Saturday. Britt (3-2) pitched four innings and allowed five hits and three runs. He struck out five.
n Keegan Linza (North Rowan) pitched Liberty to a 5-2 win against Presbyterian on Sunday. Linza (6-2) didnít allow an earned run in 51/3 innings and struck out three.
n Pfeifferís season ended at 21-28 with a 7-5, 11-inning loss to Barton in the Conference Carolinas Tournament on Sunday. John McDaniel (Davie) was the starter for Pfeiffer but lasted only one inning. He allowed three runs. Ethan Marshís strong relief gave the Falcons a chance to rally.
McDaniel (2-4) started 13 games on the hill as a senior.n Limestone eliminated Barton 6-3 and advanced to todayís championship game against Mount Olive.
Limestone has a loss in the double-elimination event, while Mount Olive hasnít lost.
n Catawba softball
Catawba took third place in the SAC by sweeping Lincoln Memorial 8-0 and 9-2 on Sunday. The Indians (29-17, 12-6) pounded 25 hits in the doubleheader, with Carly Sabat and Lauren Lewis getting five each.
Sabat had two triples and drove in five runs. Lewis had a double, triple and homer in Game 2.
Emily Huneycutt (16-8) won the opener, while Brittany Murray (13-9) was the winner in the nightcap.
n College track
Ross Oden (East Rowan) competed on Friday in the 10,000 meters for USC Upstate in the Atlantic Sun Championship in Jacksonville, Fla.
Oden ran 34:27.05 and finished 12th. USC Upstate totalled 84 points and finished fifth.
n Pro baseball
The Kannapolis Intimidators fell behind early and lost to visiting Hickory 12-3 on Sunday. Hickory scored four runs in the first inning.
Juan Silverio, Brady Shoemaker and Trayce Thompson knocked in runs for Kannapolis.
n Prep baseball
North Hills beat Statesville Christian 12-6 on Friday. Matt Ward went 5-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Drew Kelly homered and drove in three. Blake Hickman, Austin Patterson and Ward did the pitching.
n Local golf
The McCanless Ladies Golf Association Spring Handicap Tournament was held recently. Mechelle Kuld won low net. She was followed by Sharon Miller, Beverly Cobb and Eileen Full.
n The McCanless Couples played a nine-hole match on Sunday with a two-man Best Ball format.
Sheila and Chris Livengood won the event, with Kim and Walt Kincaid second, and Juan Garcia and Sheila Livengood placing third.
