The college basketball roundup …
RALEIGH ó North Carolina State has hired Rob Moxley as an assistant coach.
Moxley served as an assistant at Middle Tennessee last year and had served as associate head coach at Charlotte for five seasons under Bobby Lutz, who has also joined Mark Gottfriedís staff. Moxley spent 12 years with the 49ers overall and also spent a year as an assistant at Maryland.
Gottfried called Moxley ěa phenomenal recruiterî in a statement from the school.
Lutz and Moxley join Orlando Early as assistants to Gottfried, who replaced Sidney Lowe as coach.
UNC SIGNEE
CHAPEL HILL ó North Carolina has found some more help for a thin front line.
The Tar Heels have signed 6-foot-9 forward Desmond Hubert to a letter of intent, a late addition to bolster a front line with only two experienced returnees.
Hubert averaged 16 points, nine rebounds and six blocks as a senior. He’ll join a frontcourt that includes Tyler Zeller and John Henson ó who both decided to return to school instead of declaring for the NBA draft ó and touted freshman James McAdoo.
Hubert is a three-star prospect and the nation’s No. 13 center, according to Scout.com.
WAKE SIGNEE
WINSTON-SALEM ó Wake Forest has added a point guard recruit to strengthen its depth in the backcourt.
Coach Jeff Bzdelik on Thursday announced the signing of Anthony Fields of Quality Education Academy in Winston-Salem.
The Detroit native played two years of high school ball in Michigan before transferring to the Winston-Salem school.
Fields averaged 14 points and 13 assists while leading QEA to a 25-4 record.
The Demon Deacons had trouble at point guard this past season after starter Tony Chennault missed roughly two months with a broken left foot.
MIAMI COACHING
MIAMI ó Heat forward Udonis Haslem hopes Kansas State coach Frank Martin has a shot at the Miami Hurricanes’ vacant coaching position.
Haslem played for Martin at Miami High and said Friday that “if you don’t at least interview Coach Frank for that job, you’re making a big mistake.”
Martin is 95-43 in four seasons with the Wildcats. The Miami native and Cuban immigrant will be in South Florida this weekend to be enshrined in the Miami High Hall of Fame.
GEORGIA TECH
ATLANTA ó Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory has hired Josh Postorino as an assistant.
LEAVING FOR NBA
KANSAS CITY, Mo. ó Freshman guard Josh Selby is declaring for the NBA draft, leaving Kansas with only two players who had a significant role in last season’s 35-3 record.
Earlier, twin forwards Marcus and Markieff Morris hired an agent.
PULLMAN, Wash. ó Washington State junior forward DeAngelo Casto has decided to forgo his senior season and will declare for the NBA draft.
