Mt. Ulla tops in Battle of the Books

The Mt. Ulla Elementary School Battle of the Books team recently claimed the top spot in the county’s competition winning $1,000 for the school’s medic center.
The team will move on to the compete in the regional competition in Conover on Monday. Team members include Rebecca Ake, Lizzie Brumley, Kaitlyn Coggins, Morgan Corriher, Logan McNeely, Grace Morgan, Danielle Neal, Jacob Perez, Matthew Ramsay and Dylan Turner.
Granite Quarry and Koontz elementary schools came in second and third place, respectively.
Granite Quarry’s team includes Peyton Berry, Katelyn Byrd, Leah Mesimer, Sarah Roane, Sebastian Ruff, Gabrielle Silverstrim, Hannah Smith and McKenzie Trimmer.
Lindsay Elmore, Emily Free, Tyler Jones, Ishmael Kaidjuway, Roberta Moulton, Kayla Parkerson, Mary Stoelting and Justin Thomason are on the Koontz team.
The fifth-graders from each school had to read 12 books twice in order to prepare for the competition.
Those books include “Ghost Soldier,” “Greetings from Nowhere,” “The Homework Machine,” “Island of the Blue Dolphins,” “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” “Love, Ruby Lavender,” “Room One: A Mystery of Two,” “Savvy,” “Shiloh,” “The Tale of Despreaux,” “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing” and “The Year of the Dog.”
