The United States Postal Service will release for sale a commemorative stamp titled “Jazz.”
The official first day of issue for this new Jazz stamp will be held in New Orleans on Saturday.
But, this stamp will also go on sale at the Harmony post office on Saturday from 9-11 a.m. A special pictorial postmark, designed by Statesville artist David Smith, will be available to mark this first day of sale event.
Pictorial postmarks are collectibles as they are applied to the mail by hand and are used for a very limited time.
This pictorial postmark will coincide with the USPS official release of the jazz stamp and will be used for one day only at the Harmony post office.
For Smith the small town of Harmony had a musical ring to its name, so he was inspired in January to meet with the Harmony Postmaster Kelly Kirk and plan this event.
The artwork for postmark design was approved for use in February.
Customers may bring in items they would like mailed using this postmark. Also, if customers would like to have this postmark as a keepsake, hand back service will be available.
Kirk will hand cancel cards, envelopes, postcards, band photos and other memorabilia. Items must meet postal regulations and bear the correct postage in order to receive the commemorative postmark.
Collectors unable to attend this event will have a 30-day grace period to submit requests for the postmark by mail.
