Back To Back Waters Joins Rare Company With 2nd Wrestling Title

Michael Waters wrote one last remarkable page in his storybook career last weekend at the Greensboro Coliseum, winning a state championship for the second time and joining the rarest of company in Davie’s wrestling program.
Waters, who won the 112 title as a junior, won the 125 title to become Davie’s first repeat champion in 15 years. Slide over, Scotty Spry and Neil Cornatzer. Now there’s a third War Eagle with multiple state championships. Spry won three in a row from 1993-95, and Cornatzer won twice in 1995-96.
Davie’s other state champion was fellow senior Matt Cusack, who took the crown at 171.
Senior Tony Donati (fifth at 135) and juniors Trevor Albarron (sixth at 103) and Alex Costner (sixth at 112) were place winners as Davie finished third with 84 points. Parkland had 145 points to win the state tournament for the fifth consecutive year, and Lake Norman was second at 109. Davie outdistanced fourth-place Southern Alamance by 8.5 points.
Waters’ extraordinary career saw him go 46-8 and place sixth in the state as a freshman, 52-7 to place second as a sophomore, 50-1 to place first as a junior and 55-5 to place first as a senior. He’s Davie’s all-time winner with …
