Area sports briefs: East's Justus gets 300th wrestling win

East Rowan’s Barry Justus coached his 300th wrestling victory at the helm of the Mustangs over the weekend.
He reached the milestone when East went 5-0 at the Berry Duals.
Justus’ career record is 302-144-2, including a 23-1 mark in 1997 and a 25-8 record in 2007.
At Berry, beat Harding 78-3; topped the hosts 78-5; outscored Hopewell 60-17; slammed North Meck 70-12; and handled North Wilkes 51-22.
Nick Cornacchione (103 pounds), Mark Almeida (119) Morgan Crawford (125), Tyler Lloyd (140) and Cameron Feriante (160) went 5-0 in the Berry tournament. Kory Shaffer and Charles Goff combined for a 5-0 mark at 135.
Jason Deutsch (112), Wyatt Blume (130), Josh Byrd (145), William Jacobs (152), Kendall Morgan (215) and Frankie Bell (heavyweight) went 4-1, while Jake Ward (171) was 3-2.
• East (12-11, 0-2 NPC) lost a recent NPC match to West Iredell 39-38. Cornacchione, Deutsch, Goff, Feriante and Morgan registered pins for the Mustangs. Almeida and Shaffer won major decisions.
West Iredell freshman Payton Shuford, son of WI assistant coach Tim Shuford, recorded a pin at 125 pounds and is now 24-0 with 14 pins.
• Prep basketball
Northwest Cabarrus’ boys held off Mount Pleasant 68-67 for an SPC victory on Monday.
It was closer than expected. The Tigers (1-7 SPC) missed a shot in the closing seconds that would’ve won it.
“Well, our fans hadn’t seen a game for a while, so when we were up 15 or so, we decided to make things interesting,” joked Northwest coach Daniel Jenkins. “Fans ended up getting their money’s worth.”
Ray Kingston led the Trojans (6-1 SPC) with 12 points. Corey Seager scored 11. Tyler Church had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
• Albemarle swept a YVC doubleheader from South Davidson on Monday, with the boys winning 74-61 and the girls taking a 42-38 decision.
The games were moved up 24 hours because of weather concerns.
Albemarle’s girls remained unbeaten in the YVC, while Albemarle’s boys stayed right behind frontrunner North Rowan with one loss.
Albemarle plays at North on Friday.
• In YVC girls basketball, Albemarle’s Paige McConlogue and North Moore’s Coco Brower reached the 1,000-point milestone this month.
• Central Davidson’s girls (4-0 CCC) edged Thomasville 51-47 on Monday and have emerged as the top challenger to Salisbury
Thomasville’s boys topped Central Davidson 44-30.
• Tonight’s games include North Davidson at Davie and A.L. Brown at Central Cabarrus.
•Lots of rescheduled contests are set for Wednesday. Salisbury is at Central Davidson; North Rowan is at South Stanly; East Rowan is at Carson; West Rowan is at West Iredell; South Rowan is at Statesville; and A.L. Brown is at Northwest Cabarrus.

• Prep swimming
NCHSAA championships in swimming will be held at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Feb. 10-12.
The 1A/2A Meet is on Thursday, Feb. 10. The 4A Meet is on Friday, Feb. 11. The 3A Meet will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Swimming will begin each day with preliminaries starting after the coaches meeting, which is scheduled to end at around 8:45 a.m. Finals are slated to begin at 5 p.m. each day.
Carrboro is the defending 1A/2A boys champion while Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons captured the 3A title in 2010 and Providence won 4A.
East Chapel Hill won the 4A girls title last season. Charlotte Catholic is the defending 3A champ, while West Davidson prevailed in 1A/2A.
• The NPC Meet starts Thursday morning at the Hurley YMCA, and the CCC Meet will be held at the Hurley Y on the same day.
• Local golf
Twenty-three hardy GARS members played a round of golf at Warrior on Monday.
Low ‘A’ flight player was Dale Cobb with a net of 65.75.
Low ‘B’ flight player with a net of 65.50 was David Schenk.
Larry Luther was the low ‘C’ flight player with a net of 64.29.
Low ‘D’ flight player with a net of 70.19 was Doug Lingle.
• Pro basketball
Donte Minter (West Rowan) scored 14 points in 13 minutes of action, and Junior Hairston (West) added 12 points for their team in the Dutch pro league on Saturday.
• College basketball
Darius Moose (Carson) had five points and three rebounds for Brevard in a 77-64 loss to Winston-Salem State on Monday.
• College baseball
UNC Pembroke was picked seventh in the Peach Belt preseason baseball poll.
UNC Pembroke returns six starters from a 34-14 team.
Georgia College & State University was picked to win the league.
• Catawba clinics, camps
The Catawba spring tennis junior tennis clinics will begin on the weekend of Feb. 5.
The clinics will be held on Saturday mornings from 10-11 a.m. for beginners, ages 4-12, and 11 to noon for intermediate and advanced players.
The clinics will also be held on Sunday afternoons, with beginners from 2-3 and intermediates from 3-4.
The cost of a clinic is $10.
• Dates for Catawba’s summer tennis camps are June 13-16 (full day), June 20-23 (half), June 27-30 (half), July 18-21 (half), Aug. 1-4 (half) and Aug. 8-11 (half).
