Susan Mae Comer Banner 

Susan Mae Comer Banner, 62, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, December 23, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born December 19, 1948 in Independence, VA to Wilson Morrell and Carolyn Williams Comer. Mrs. Banner attended First Wesleyan Church. She attended West Forsyth High School, and was a former owner of Bobby Sue’s Lounge and co-owner of Magic Nail and Hair Salon. She was an avid NASCAR fan, loved traveling especially the beach, and loved the Lord. She was proud of her son and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother; one sister, Gwendolyn Taylor Ingraham; and an infant son. Surviving are her father, Wilson Comer and wife Dorris; her husband, Olin Willis of Winston-Salem; one son, Frank Morrell and wife Angela Banner; four sisters, Mary Mazzeo and husband Duffy, Vivian Comer, Barbara Martin and husband Joe, and Alice Hill, all of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Angela Lee Banner, Susan Marie Banner, Frank Morrell Banner, Jr., and Andrew Robert Henry Banner; a multitude of nieces and nephews; caregiver/ companion, Toria “Dede” Douglas; and a special pet, “Momma Kitty”. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 30 at First Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Tommy Albertson officiating. Burial followed in Crestview Memorial Park. Joe Ralph Brinkley 

Joe Ralph Brinkley, 81, of Lexington, NC, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010. He was born in Davidson County, NC on July 17, 1929 to Fernando Lee and Jennie Hinkle Brinkley. Joe was a faithful member of Union Grove Baptist Church. He was a retired brick mason. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers Roy, Renza, Walter, and Baxter Brinkley; one sister Lala Byerly; brother-in-law Neil Byerly; and daughter-in-law Pamela Key Brinkley. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Bettye Craver Brinkley; four sons, Joey Brinkley (Sheila), Kevin Brinkley, Renon Brinkley (Angie), and Tera Brinkley (Pam) all of Lexington, NC; and two daughters, Myra Hutchens (Ken) of Lewisville, NC, Kyrun Martin (Virgil) of Lexington, NC; seven grandchildren: Amber Joyce, Timothy Brinkley, Amanda Tapler, Matthew Brinkley, Candice Hill, Kayla Brinkley, and Jamee Hutchens; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Webb Brinkley (Alice); and three sisters, Ethel Crowell, Thelma Daniels, and Elsie Fritts (Paul). A Funeral Service was conducted Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Union Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Harris, Dr. Harold Fletcher, and the Rev. T. W. Bailey officiating. Burial followed in the Church cemetery. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the 6th and 8th floor staff of Forsyth Medical Center, Dr. James Dilley, and Lexington Dialysis Center for the care they gave Mr. Brinkley.

Mary Madeline Higgins Cox 

Mrs. Mary Madeline Higgins Cox, 84, of Clemmons passed away Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Brookstone Terrace of Clemmons. Mrs. Cox was born in Yadkin County on October 28, 1926 to Fred Crater and Cleo Trivette Crater. She retired from Western Electric as an inspector. Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her son Wayne Bostick, Sr and wife Becki of Winston-Salem, one grandson Wayne Bostick, Jr of Winston-Salem, three step-daughters; Leslie Wooten of Charlotte, Stacy Williamson of Augusta, GA, and Sherry Walker of Lenoir, several great-grandchildren, one brother Larry Crater, three sisters; Marie Westmoreland, Betty Masten and Linda Campbell. Delia Yountz Hege 

Delia Yountz Hege, age 96 of Clemmons went to be with the Lord on Friday December 31, 2010 at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living. A Funeral Service was held Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel with the Rev. Ken Harris, the Rev. TW Bailey and Dr. Harold Fletcher officiating. Burial followed at Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Hege was born in Davidson County on May 25, 1914 to Gurney Franklin Yountz and Mary Hoffman Yountz. She was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Gerthie Franklin Hege, her brothers; Telmos Yountz, Robert Younts, her sister; Ella Byerly. Surviving are her son: Franklin Hege of Arcadia; her daughter, Alyce Hartman and husband, C A of Midway; her sister, Pauline Young and husband, Clyde Jr. of Arcadia; her grandchildren, Brian Hege, Marty Hartman and wife, Angelia, her great-grandchild, Sarah Hartman. Margaret Elizabeth Hepp 

Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Hepp, 79, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, January 1, 2011. Beloved mother and mother-in-law; She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, husband, Chester Anthony Hepp, daughter, Maureen Ann Zell, and son, Dale Anthony Hepp. She is survived by her two sons, David Patrick Hepp and Dwayne Michael Hepp, daughter, Deborah Ann Considine and husband Thomas, brother, Lawrence Evert, and seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Margaret was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church for seven years. Special thanks to Hospice Palliative Care of Winston-Salem.

Buford Naomi 

Findling Kessler 

Buford Naomi Findling Kessler, known to her family and friends as “ Bea”, was born in Huntington, West VA on July 26, 1926 and has passed into the presence of Jesus on January 2, 2011 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Bea grew up in Coolville, Ohio and has been a resident of Winston Salem since 1949. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, John A. Kessler, “ Jack”. Preceding her in death were her parents, Oscar David Findling and Maggie Bentz Findling, and her sister, Josephine Findling Daughtery. After Bea retired from Forsyth Memorial Hospital with 43 years of service, working as a devoted and nurturing RN, she continued using her skills by volunteering in the ER for 13 years. She joined Friedberg Moravian Church in 1971 and loved singing in the choir. Bea enjoyed all of nature especially her birds and flowers. She is survived by her loving family of a daughter, Jennifer Kessler Craver and husband, Steve, of Rural Hall; a son, John Findling Kessler and wife, Carol, of Pinnacle; five grandchildren, Brian Kessler, Matthew Craver, John Jordan Kessler, Julie Cooke, and Rebecca Craver; six great grandchildren, and many close friends and a special caregiver, all of whom she loved dearly. A Funeral Service was held Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Friedberg Moravian Church followed by a visitation, 2178 Friedberg Church Road, Winston Salem, NC 27127. Platt Duke Moody Jr. 

Platt Duke Moody Jr., 96 died Friday, December 24, 2010 at Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Mr. Moody was born July 3, 1914 to the late Platt Duke and Florence Corriher Moody. He was also preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, LaRue C. Moody; three brothers Fred J. Moody, Hubert C. Moody, and Harold J. Moody. Surviving family includes daughter Linda M. Baucom of Clemmons, NC, daughter and son in law Betty M. and Carlton C. Alexander of Hoffman, NC; grandchildren Angie Baucom of Roswell, GA and Marty Baucom of Lexington, NC; a number of nieces and nephews; and many friends. Mr. Moody graduated from Central High School in Charlotte. He retired from Cadmus (Washburn Printing Company) after thirty seven years. He was a lifelong member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Charlotte, where he printed all church materials from 1957 to 2008. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. A Funeral Service, celebrating the Life of Platt D. Moody, was conducted at Calvary United Methodist Church, 512 West Boulevard, Charlotte, on Dec. 29. Reverend Melita Padilla  officiated, and interment followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Charlotte. Mr. Moody, also known by his grandchildren and many friends as “Pete”, was a devoted family man and a wonderful son, brother, and uncle. He was caring and gentle to his wife, children, and grandchildren. He never said no to anyone that needed help and was always there for everyone. Emily R. Winfrey 

Mrs. Emily R. Winfrey, 84 of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Vienna Village. She was born in Lewisville, NC on August 20, 1926 to William A. Rock, Sr. and Essie Lumley Rock. She grew up and was confirmed at Lewisville United Methodist Church, and after marriage she became a member of Marvin United Methodist Church. She was a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church, for 42 years, where she was a UMW President and Coordinator of Maple Springers for 15 years. Notably Emily received 2 Life Member Awards from both Maple Springs and Marvin Church. Additionally, she was a member of the Oldtown Eastern Star #355. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; one sister; and her son, Manly Winfrey. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Clement “Red” Winfrey of the home; a son, Joe Winfrey and wife, Patty of Winston-Salem; daughter, Jane Howard and husband, Kim of Hickory; daughter-in-law, LuAnn Winfrey of Winston-Salem; and eight grandchildren: Brian, Emily, Adam, Mandy, Lee, Brittany, Matthew, and Courtney. Graveside service was held Friday, December 31, 2010 at Forsyth Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life Service was held at Maple Springs United Methodist Church, with Dr. Terry Matthews and Jeremy Pegram officiating. Memorials may be made to Maple Springs United Methodist Church. Billy Lee Cole 

Mr. Billy Lee Cole, 71 of Lewisville, NC passed away Monday, January 03, 2011 at his home. Mr. Cole was born January 26, 1939 in Watauga County to the late Wiley James and Lena Houck Cole. Billy was a US Army Veteran, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a faithful member of Woodland Baptist Church for 45 years and was a member of the Watchman’s Bible Sunday School Class. In addition of his parents, Billy was preceded in death by a brother; Clyde Cole and a brother-in-law, David Adams. Surviving to cherish his memory is his wife of 50 years, JoAnn Eggers Cole of the home; a sister; Barbara Adams of Vilas, NC; two brothers, Clarence Cole and wife, Catherine of Boone, NC, Everette Cole and wife, Jean of Vilas, NC, a special niece, Lynn Funk and several other nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Woodland Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Gammons officiating. A Graveside Service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 6, in the Mountlawn Memorial Park and Gardens in Boone, NC. Albert Ray Miller 

Albert Ray Miller passed away Sunday, January 2, 2011. He was born in Yadkin County, NC, March 26, 1919 to Joseph and Edith Azmon Miller. He was married sixty five years to Louise Dull who predeceased him in 2005. Together they had six children, Janet Ford (Craig), Bonnie Prisk, Sandra Nash (Bruce), A. Ray Miller Jr. (Jane), Gail Phillips (William) and Robin (Rebecca). Albert was proud of his large family and was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was Papa to his fourteen grandchildren, Andrea, Christopher, David, Andrew, Stephanie, Matthew, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Katharine, Gregory, Emily, Caroline, Peter and Allison. He was also Grandpapa to thirteen great-grandchildren; Carter, Magdalene, Benjamin, Hannah, Oliver, Addison, Chase, Jonathon, Zachary, Connor, Laila, Wesley, and Owen. Besides his parents and wife he was pre-deceased by his brothers, Joseph, Glenn and infant John Miller; sisters, Hattie Plott, Frances Allen and Sarah Marcella Boyer. Survivors include his sister Carolyn Rice and brothers, Burley and Leon Miller and many cousins, nieces and nephews, including special nephew Nick Miller. Albert served in the US Navy and was a Veteran of WW II. He retired from the City of Winston-Salem as a supervisor in the Property Management Department. He was a member of Concord UMC in Lewisville where he served as a trustee, board chairman and Sunday School teacher. Funeral Services will be at Concord United Methodist Church (336-945-3691), 8955 Concord Church Road, Lewisville 27023 at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, with burial in the church cemetery.
