Landis-South Rowan Optimists meet
The Landis-South Rowan Optimist Club met on Dec. 10 with nine members present at Porky’s Bar-B-Q in China Grove.
President Ruth Johnson called the meeting to order, prayer and grace was given by Larry Holt, and Johnson shared a devotional from “Old Wondrous Star,” a poem entitled “The Season of Love,” and a reading from Psalm 105:3.
The minutes from November’s meeting were read and approved. Georgia Harris gave the treasurer’s report. Ken Norton stressed the importance of support for th fundraising project.
Larry Holt is chairman of Dime-A-Day. The meeting closed with the Optimist Creed.
In November, new officers were elected for 2009-10: president-Ruth Johnson; vice president-James Wilkie; secretary-Ruth Berry; treasurer-Georgia Harris.
New to the area is Lt. Governor Tatangla Phillips for Zone 9. She is a member of the Concord Club.
Recent guests from the Salisbury Optimist Club were the Rev. Bob Freeman and Harold Thomas. Thomas spoke to the youth club about “Being the Best You Can Be Every Day.”
During Youth Appreciation Week, there were speakers from the Charlotte, Hidden Valley Club: Lt. Governor Gladys Highland and Richard Highland, committee chair of the Optimist International Foundation. They introduced golf vocabulary, history and facts to the group. Taylor Wiggins, daughter of Marcy Hester-Wiggins, is taking golfing lessons from her grandfather Bennett Hester.
Optimist Dan Partee Ellerbe, Army veteran, delighted the group with facts about the United States Army and other countries. She shared artifacts and pictures from her collection.
Last quarter Ken Norton received the Hall of Fame Award. Ruth Berry was awarded the Outstanding Communication for Bulletin editor, and Georgia Harris received the Small Club Award.
Landis Optimist and guests enjoyed a Christmas social at Sandy Ridge Church.
