In 1972, there were 25 men who liked bass fishing so much, they formed a club, Salisbury Bass Masters.
“They formed this club to focus not only on fishing, but fellowship,” said member Steve Shirley.
Shirley, the club’s secretary, submitted $150 from current members in honor of three charter members who have died.
Those members were John Miller, who was the first president; Stewart Cuthrell and C.L. Eagle, who died this year.
“They stayed in the club until they died,” Shirley said.
Currently, there are 25 members of the Bass Masters. They have fishing tournaments, family picnics, dinners and other social activities.
The group meets monthly at the Rowan County Wildlife Center.
The club used to donate annually to Christmas Happiness and the members decided to pick it back up again with a donation in honor of their founding members.
“They were good friends and good fishermen, and we wanted to honor them,” Shirley said.
