East Rowan JROTC Rifle Team takes first place

East Rowan’s JROTC Rifle Team, A-Team, placed first in a six-county competition Dec. 5.
Cary High School’s A-team placed second and East’s B-Team took third.
Trophies went to the highest shooters from each team ó Franklin Wright, A-Team; Amy Carlton, B-Team; David Harwood, C-Team.
Three of East’s shooters received top overall trophies. Wright won first place overall, shooting 265 out of 300. Derrick Thompson was second place overall, shooting 262 out of 300. Thor Wright was fourth overall, shooting 250 out of 300.
East’s A-Team members are Commander C/LTC Wright, C/CPT Jesse Jeffery, C/SFC Derrick Thompson and C/SSG Thor Wright.
B-Team members are C/CPT Joseph Scrip, C/SFC Sam Lakey, C/SGT Amy Carlton and C/SGT Alex Owens.
C-Team members are C/SFC Miranda Harding, C/SFC Brian Lentz, C/SGT Brandon Gardner and C/SGT David Harwood.
East’s Rifle Team is coached by 1SG Richard Sisk and Gary Wood.
Also on Dec. 5, East’s JROTC Raider team competed in the Fourth Brigade State Raider Challenge.
Eighteen teams competed in the modified Army Physical Fitness Test, Humvee Pull, 5 kilometer road march, 400 meter litter carry and one-rope bridge.
East placed third overall, placing first in the coed cateory and first in the one-rope bridge. They set a new state record in the rope bridge, with a time of 1:20, breaking the old record of 1:24 that East set the previous year.
Team members are Commander C/LTC Barrett Stehr, C/SGM Justin Jacobsen, C/CPT Isaac Jones, C/1SG Garrett Garcia, C/MSG Robbie Martin, C/PFC Tyler Hood, C/PVT Leah Bumby and C/PVT Chris Ledbetter.
Cadet Leah Bumby received an individual medal for second place on the fitness test in the female category.
The East Rowan Raider team is coached by LTC Rollins Collins. He has instructed East’s entire JROTC unit and Raider team for 15 years.
