U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole is recuperating from hip replacement surgery she underwent Tuesday morning at an undisclosed hospital, her office has announced.
The surgery on Dole’s right hip took less than an hour, and she was doing well on Tuesday afternoon, said Katie Norman, the senator’s spokeswoman.
Norman said she did not know where Dole was hospitalized.
The senator timed the surgery to occur while Congress is on break and will resume her Senate duties after a few weeks of recuperation, Norman said.
Dole, 70, a native of Salisbury, was elected to the Senate in 2002 to represent North Carolina. Chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, she headed the GOP’s efforts to elect Republicans to the Senate in November.
