Third-grade students from Millbridge Elementary School donned reindeer antlers to sing Christmas carols for Lutheran Home residents Monday.

The event was a kick-off for Millbridge’s pen-pal program.

April Weaver, third-grade teacher, said she and other third-grade teachers wanted to teach students about giving back to the community.

Together, Millbridge and the activities department at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks matched students with residents for the program.

Millbridge students sent out invitations for the singing event to their pen pals, complete with pictures of themselves.

“Hopefully they’ll be able to meet their pen pals before they leave,” Weaver said.

Many students were able to visit with their pen pals before going back to school and give them handmade holiday wreaths for display on their room doors.

Weaver said the third grade was planning to write to pen pals monthly and come back to visit in the spring.
