MILLBRIDGE — A man died about 9 p.m. Wednesday when the small pickup he was driving flipped over off a dirt road in Millbridge.

The victim’s identity was not immediately available.

The driver had apparently turned off Millbridge Road onto Fannie Sloan Road and was traveling west toward N.C. 150. The rural site is across N.C. 150 from Sloan Park.

The vehicle apparently went out of control as it crossed the bridge over Kerr Creek, then ran off the left side of the road.

It came to rest overturned and off the roadway. The man was pinned in the cab of the truck, which was heavily damaged.

According to police scanner traffic, the first emergency workers to respond thought they felt a weak pulse and called for a life-flight helicopter. But that request was soon cancelled when it was determined that the driver was dead.

Once a wrecker arrived, the truck was pulled upright and out of the gully, and the man’s body removed.

Rescue personnel at the scene said there were containers of alcohol in the cab of the overturned truck.

Emergency personnel from the Locke Fire Department and Rowan Rescue Squad responded, along with other emergency personnel. Troopers from the N.C. Highway Patrol were also at the scene.

A report from the N.C. Highway Patrol was not available Wednesday night. About 11 p.m., a Highway Patrol official said the trooper was in the process of notifying family members.
