Firefighters evacuated residents and quickly put out a blaze Monday night at the Ashton Woods Apartments, 1100 Bringle Ferry Road.

Called about 10:10 p.m., firefighters extinguished the flames in apartment No. 313 within minutes of arrival. Heat and smoke had caused some damage in apartments above that unit, but the flames had not extended beyond the apartment, firefighters on the scene said.

It was unclear Monday night what caused the fire.
