Dixon accepts award

Sunny Spires Dixon of Virginia Beach, Va., accepted the Blue Ribbon School Award for her school from the U.S. Department of Education last month in Washington, D.C.

The award was for Kilby Shores Elementary School in Suffolk, Va., where Dixon has been principal for 17 years. The school was one of 290 elementary, middle, high and magnet public and private schools nationwide to win the award which is based on academic achievement for all students.

Dixon is the daughter of C.E. Spires of Salisbury and the late Fannie Owen Spires.
