Yadkin bridges on Perdue agenda

Commissioners and legislative delegations from Rowan and Davidson counties have been invited to meet Tuesday morning with Gov. Bev Perdue to discuss the Interstate 85 bridges over the Yadkin River.
The 10:30 a.m. meeting will be held in the Governor’s Office in Raleigh.
Officials from both counties have been pushing state and federal agencies to find funding for the replacement of the bridges, which date back to 1955. Department of Transportation officials consider the structures safe, but they are narrow without shoulders and carry upwards of 80,000 vehicles a day.
They are part of a 6.8-mile widening project of I-85 that has lost its funding.
