An accident on Interstate 85 at Kannapolis shut down all northbound lanes around 3 p.m.

Traffic backed up for miles.

The accident involved a tractor trailer and a fuel spill south of the Lane Street exit according to preliminary information.

One northbound lane was reopened at 4:11 p.m.

Traffic was being rerouted along U.S. 29.

Mount Mitchell, Kannapolis and Concord Fire Departments were on the scene.
