Schoolchildren will make up Tuesday’s snow day on Thursday.
Students in Rowan-Salisbury Schools were out of school Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. birthday.
On Tuesday, they got an unexpected day off as the county received a light dusting of snow.
On the school system’s Web site, Thursday was originally listed as a protected teacher workday, with a make-up day or workday listed for Friday.
Officials decided on Tuesday to flip-flop the calendar.
Teachers got the information early Tuesday morning in a phone call noting schools were closed for the day.
“It was confusing because Thursday was a protected workday,” said Rita Foil, the schools’ public information officer. “We switched that around because we have exams.”
The fact that exams are going on made the decision to call school early Tuesday morning all the more difficult, Foil said late Tuesday. But road conditions also deteriorated in a matter of minutes, she added.
Tuesday’s exams will be given on Thursday.
“That’s why we had to bump that required workday to Friday,” Foil said. “Plus it doesn’t make a lot of sense to go to school Wednesday and Friday.
“We have to have to those protected workdays, but we can move them around, too.”
