CHARLOTTE (AP) ó Gov. Mike Easley says a third state-sponsored passenger train is being added to the route between Charlotte and Raleigh because of growing demand for service.
Easley said Wednesday that the new train is scheduled to have departures at midday from both cities.
The state Department of Transportation already sponsors the Piedmont and Carolinian passenger trains between Charlotte and Raleigh with each train making a morning and evening run as part of the Amtrak service. Northbound service on the Carolinian continues on to New York.
Easley said ridership had increased 22 percent from October 2007 to April and that 197,126 people rode the trains during that period.
