NAMI meeting

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Rowan will hold its next educational meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Statesville Boulevard.
According to a study published in the journal, “Sleep,” anxiety can cause sleep problems for up to six months after a stressful life event has occurred. Insomnia can be a symptom of both depression and anxiety; thus, recognizing underlying psychological factors that may be contributing to the loss of a good night’s sleep is very important.
Patti Lyerly of Lyerly Counseling Services will address at Tuesday’s meeting how Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help an individual heal from traumatic memories that may be causing the depression, anxiety, and subsequently the insomnia.
In addition, insomnia can sometimes be caused by unproductive habits revolving around the negative belief that one will be unable to sleep. Lyerly will also demonstrate how EMDR can assist individuals in developing a more productive belief system leading to a good night’s sleep.
Information about the effects of sleep on health will be provided by Susan Agner, member of NAMI Rowan. Contact Susan Agner at 704-647-0168 for questions about the educational meeting.
