KANNAPOLIS ó Claude La-Fevers was mowing his yard Friday evening when he felt a sting in his back.
He heard a loud noise, looked around and didn’t see anyone on the street or in the area.
He kept mowing ó unaware that he had been shot.
An hour or so later when he finished mowing, someone took a look at his back and suggested he had been shot.
LaFevers initially refused transport by EMS to the hospital, wanting to drive himself. Eventually, the Rowan EMS transported him from his home at 512 W. Eighth St. to Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast in Concord.
Lt. Milton Davis of the Kannapolis Police Department said the hospital confirmed he had been shot with a small caliber bullet.
Medical personnel opted to leave the bullet in since it was not in a critical area. He was treated and released.
Davis said police interviewed neighbors and turned up no information to explain how LaFevers got shot or who shot him. “It’s a complete mystery,” Davis said. “We don’t know what occurred.”
