Staff report
One person was killed and three others injured in a head-on collision on Old Mocksville Road Friday night.
The accident at 5080 Old Mocksville Road was called in at 7:58 p.m., according to John Sharp, shift supervisor for Rowan County EMS. The victim, Julio Santiago, was pronounced dead after rescue workers freed him from his 1998 Honda Civic.
Trooper A.J. Carpenter of the N.C. Highway Patrol said Santiago was traveling south ěat a very high rate of speedî when he crossed the center line and struck a 2007 Audi head-on.
The driver of the Audi and her two children were injured in the collision and transported to Rowan Regional Medical Center.
The first Rowan County EMS ambulance responding to the scene broke down and had to be towed in. ěThe unit itself was filled with smoke,î Sharp said. ěThere may have been some kind of small electrical fire, but Iím not sure on that.î
A Rowan Rescue Squad vehicle and a second EMS ambulance arrived afterward to transport the three injured people.
Carpenter said alcohol was not a factor in the collision, ějust high speed.î
