It was unclear whether the smoke in downtown Salisbury late Thursday night was coming from the massive wildfire at a federal wildlife refuge in eastern North Carolina.
A spokesperson for the Rowan County 911 Center said a couple of people had called in about the smoke, but that no cause had been found. The Salisbury Fire Department did respond to a fire call on Jake Alexander Boulevard late Thursday, but no fire was found.
The wildfire in and around the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, located about 70 miles south of Norfolk, Va., has burned 28,985 acres or about 50 square miles so far.
