Greensboro woman charged with fraud in Rowan

RALEIGH ó Insurance Commissioner Jim Long today announced the arrest of Lakasha Delshonne Evans, 34, of 2303-A Phillips Ave., Greensboro. She was arrested by Department of Insurance investigators yesterday and charged with three counts of obtaining property by false pretense.
She was processed at the Guilford County jail and released under a written promise to appear in court. She is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 10.
Evans confessed to staging falls at Wal-mart, Pier 1 and Dollar General stores in Rowan County from November 2006 to September 2007; she received some $12,000 from the stores as compensation for her “injuries.”
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating claims of insurance fraud. In 2007, these investigators saw more than 525 cases successfully closed with more than $14.5 million in restitution and recoveries, 53 criminal convictions and 109 arrests.
