Staff report
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Sunday afternoon mobile home fire off St. Matthews Church Road.
Liberty firefighters responded to the call shortly before 3 p.m. at 157 Roy Miller Park Road, a mobile home park.
Chief Darren Trexler said the singlewide mobile home had flames coming out of the windows of the living room area when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire, but the mid-1990s mobile home was destroyed.
Trexler said a mother and daughter who rented the the home had left a short time before the fire started, according to neighbors.
They returned while firemen were at the scene. Trexler said they lost everything in the fire.
The woman, whose identity was not immediately available, told firefighters that no appliances were supposed to be on when she and her daughter left.
A Rowan Sheriff’s Office fire investigator was called to the scene. Investigators were on the scene late Sunday evening digging through the remains of the home.
Trexler referred questions about how the fire started or the possibility of arson to the Sheriff’s Office.
