Filing deadlines near for two local races

As the Rowan County Board of Elections office prepares for a second primary in a state race, filing periods are nearing for two local races, including the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education.
On June 24, Democrats will choose between Mary Fant Donnan and John C. Brooks for N.C. Labor Commissioner. The winner will face Republican incumbent Cherie Berry in the Nov. 4 election.
Polls will open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. on June 24.
Only registered Democrats, unaffiliated voters who voted Democrat in the first primary or unaffiliated voters who did not vote in the first primary will be eligible to vote in this primary.
Republican and unaffiliated voters who voted in the Republican primary on May 6 are not eligible to vote on June 24.
The Elections Office is also preparing for filing to fill seats on the Soil and Water District Supervisors and the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education.
Filing will begin at noon June 9 and end at noon July 7 for the Soil and Water District Supervisor.
Anyone wanting to file for the Board of Education may do so beginning at noon July 18 through noon Aug. 15th.
Candidates must be residents and qualified voters of the school district they file for.
Districts that will be on the ballot for the Nov. 4 election are:
– Seat 3 ó East district, seat currently held by James W. Emerson;
– Seat 5 ó Salisbury, seat currently held by Bryce Beard; and
– Seat 7 ó Southeast, seat currently held by Linda A. Freeze.
