MILLERíS FERRY ó U.S. Rep. Howard Coble, R-N.C., was instrumental in obtaining a posthumous degree from Central Piedmont Community College for Justin Monroe.
Monroe, 19, was a lieutenant with the Millerís Ferry Fire Department when he was killed in March while battling a blaze as a member of the Salisbury Fire Department.
He was close to completing his degree in fire sciences from CPCC at the time of his death.
On Wednesday, during a visit to various locations throughout the 6th District, Coble stopped by Millerís Ferry Fire Department where he presented Monroeís parents, Eddie and Lisa Monroe, the degree.
There were firefighters from numerous fire departments in attendance ó in addition to Millerís Ferry and Salisbury, Monroe also served the Spencer Fire Department ó as well as junior firefighters, family members and friends.
Salisbury Fire Department Battalion Chief David Morris spoke, as did other members of the fire departments represented ó Millerís Ferry, Granite Quarry, Locke and Salisbury.
Monroeís parents were presented a framed degree. Several Millerís Ferry firefighters said Justin would study at the department and said he was anxious to complete his degree.
