Homecoming will be celebrated Sunday at Organ Lutheran Church. This is the 84th homecoming celebration for the 262-year-old church.
Sunday School will begin at 9:30 a.m. and worship at 10:30 a.m. There will be no 8:30 a.m. early service.
The church’s pastor, Terrell Long, will preach for the homecoming service. Special music will be provided by advanced handbells and the adult choir. Historical items and documents will be on display.
Members, former members and friends are invited to a traditional covered dish picnic lunch to be held in the picnic shelter area.
Thyatira Presbyterian
Thyatira Presbyterian Church at Millbridge, 220 White Road, will hold its annual homecoming worship service and picnic on the grounds Sunday.
Guest minister is the Rev. William Goodnight, who grew up in the congregation. He received his doctor of ministry degree from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond and has pastored several churches in North Carolina. He has been pastor at Lillington Presbyterian Church since 1992.
Sunday school is at 10 a.m., worship at 11 a.m., lunch at 12:15 p.m. A nursery is provided for preschool aged children.
‘Pack a Pew’ day
ROCKWELL ó Lyerly Evangelical Church, Crescent Road, will observe “Pack a Pew” day at their 10:30 a.m. service Sunday. The community is invited to attend.
Music will be provided by guest vocalists Lucas and Tinsley Merrell, and Junior Gaither, church pastor, will preach. A covered dish luncheon will follow the worship service.
Trading Ford Baptist
Trading Ford Baptist Church will have “Church Outside the Walls” this Sunday at Dan Nicholas Park Company Shelter. The free concert begins at 6 p.m. Free sno-cones will be available.

God’s Tabernacle
The Trustee Board of God’s Tabernacle for Believers will host its annual program Sunday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The guest speaker will be the Rev. Paul Jones, senior pastor of New Zion Baptist Church, Salisbury. Musical selections will be rendered by the guest choir. The public is invited.

Hall’s Chapel
Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church will celebrate the culmination of its second Youth in White summer session at 4 p.m. Sunday. The theme is “Youth Rising to Higher Heights In and Through God!”
Youth from Hall’s Chapel and the community participated in the five-week program. The program consisted of character education, recitation of African-American poetry, music, creative dance ministry and the teaching of spiritual discipline.
Refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall following the program.

Union LutheranUnion Lutheran Church will celebrate homecoming Sunday.
Organized in 1774, Union is one of the oldest Lutheran congregations in Rowan County. From the earliest days, when it was known as the Dutch Pine Meeting House to the year 1803 when delegates came here in a historic meeting to form the North Carolina Synod, Union has always been important to the faith life of the community.
Worship service will be held at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Robert Howard delivering the message. He will also have a children’s message.
A covered dish lunch will be served on the grounds following worship. Due to the hot weather, lunch may be served in the new fellowship hall.

Messiah Lutheran
Messiah Lutheran Church, 701 E. Lafayette St., celebrates its 65th anniversary and homecoming this Sunday at the 11 a.m. worship service.
Guest speaker will be the Rev. Glenn Reichley, who served as interim pastor for eight months during 1996. Holy communion will be observed.
Following the service, members, former members and friends are invited to the fellowship hall for a covered dish lunch and fellowship.
First Calvary Baptist
First Calvary Baptist Church will observe its annual Men’s Day Sunday.
The Rev. Luke Curry Sr. will be the speaker at the 11 a.m. worship service. Music will be provided by the First Calvary Men’s Choir, under the direction of Winnell B. Short.
Curry, a member of the ministerial staff at Trinity AME Zion Church in Gastonia, is founder/CEO of New Spirit Ministries. A longtime HIV/AIDS advocate, he was recently appointed by Bishop George Walker Sr. as conference director of the HIV/AIDS Faith Initiative for the Western Carolina District of the AME Zion Church.

Moore’s Chapel
CLEVELAND ó Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church, 5890 South River Church Road, will observe its annual homecoming Sunday.
The morning message will be delivered by the Rev. William Speas, church pastor. Lunch will be served at 2:30 p.m.
The afternoon service begins at 3:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Dwayne Tutt, pastor of Coulter’s Grove AME Zion Church in Newton, accompanied by his choir and congregation.
Moore’s Chapel will also hold revival services 7:30 p.m. nightly, Aug. 13-16, with Evangelist the Rev. Jimmy Griffin, pastor of Shiloh AME Zion Church in Statesville.

GRANITE QUARRY ó Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Granite Quarry, will celebrate homecoming Sunday.

Schmeelcke is a retired Lutheran minister who now does volunteer work with Food for the Poor. He will share information about their ministry during his sermon and during Sunday School. This group focuses on the poorest of the poor in sixteen nations throughout Central America and the Caribbean.

Upward Soccer
KANNAPOLIS ó Kannapolis First Baptist Church is registering boys and girls, kindergarten through sixth grade, for Upward Soccer this Fall.
The cost is $65, which includes a shirt, socks and Upward Soccer instructional material. To help place players on teams evenly, each player should attend the skill evaluation on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 9-10 a.m. at the Midway Ball Fields in Kannapolis at the corner of South Main Street and Dale Earnhardt Boulevard.
Upward Soccer is a developmental league designed to teach the fundamentals of soccer in addition to sportsmanship, team spirit and cooperation. Focus is placed on individual physical, mental and spiritual skill development. Each team will have a one-hour practice each week, and games will be on Saturday mornings. Games will start in September and continue through October.

Neel Road Baptist Church has a number of special events coming up.
College students will be recognized at the end of the worship service this Sunday.
The following Sunday evening opportunities are remaining in August: 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12 and 19. The focus is on Father-Son-Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. Also, the music committee has planned a special concert for Sunday evening, Aug. 26.
The children of the church will have an end of summer swim party Aug. 14. This will also be summer youth director, Nikki Reed’s last day, as she leaves to enter public education.
Plans for September include a three-session new-member orientation for those new to or thinking about joining Neel Road Baptist Church. The schedule for these sessions is 9:45 a.m. Sundays, Sept. 9, 16 and 23. Sessions will be held in the church office and will include a campus tour, introduction to Sunday school and church schedule, membership responsibilities and expectations, and “being Baptist.”

New Life Fellowship
ROCKWELL ó Teen Life @ Nite will take place Saturday, Aug. 18, 7-10:30 p.m. at New Life Fellowship, 600 Depot St., Rockwell.
