Education-Stringer wins scholastic livestock award

Phillip Stringer, a sophomore at West Rowan High School, is the first recipient of the Rowan County Scholastic Livestock Award.
The award was presented by Ryan Teal, president of the West Rowan Junior Civitan Club, at the school’s annual Future Farmers of America awards banquet. This initial award was sponsored by the Civitan Club of Salisbury.
The award, a heifer calf purchased from Frank King Jr., was delivered to Stringer at the King Angus Ranch June 16. He will be required to raise his calf under the guidance of his FFA advisor, breed his cow at the proper time and return the first heifer calf to the committee for award to another winner.
The program will be offered to all Rowan County high schools that offer agriculture courses.
Savannah dean’s list
Erin Wootten of Salisbury has been named to the spring quarter dean’s list at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., for earning a 3.5 or above grade-point average.
Gardner-Webb list
Four local students have been named to the spring semester dean’s list at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs for earning a 3.7 or higher grade-point average.
They are Shea Harris of Misenheimer, Elizabeth Farmer of Salisbury, Allie Mills of Spencer and Kelly Cobb of Woodleaf.
Wake Forest list
The following area students have been named to the spring semester dean’s list at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem for achieving a 3.0 or higher grade-point average:.
Albemarle: Lambeth Allen and Tristan Salvanera.
Gold Hill: Clayton Honeycutt.

Gray Scholarship
Bryson Nesbitt of China Grove has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 Morgan R. Gray Scholarship.
The $825 award, designated for Rowan County homeschooled students, was established in memory of Morgan Gray, an 11-year-old homeschooled student killed in an automobile accident in 2001.
Applicants must be full-time students accepted by a college, university, nursing, business or trade school. They must also present evidence of good character through participation in extracurricular activities, including involvement in community affairs, church and employment.
Bryson will be attending Catawba College in the fall.
N.C. A&T dean’s list
Ten Rowan County students have been named to the spring semester dean’s list at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro.
They are Maurice Adkins, Cordero Archie, Heather Bryan, Desiree Charleston, LaNette Chunn, Tanzanika Cowan, Gregory Jackson, Amiben Patel, Brooke Waller and Shirelle Wright.
Teen parent awards
Jessica Absher and April Scully are the recipients of $500 Good Beginnings for Teen Parents Scholarships.
The awards are given annually to a high school senior who completes the Good Beginnings for Teen Parents program.
Absher, a 2008 graduate of West Rowan High School, plans to pursue a degree in biotechnology at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. She is the daughter of Denniene Absher of Salisbury.
Scully, a 2008 graduate of Carson High School, is enrolled in the pre-nursing program at RCCC. She is the daughter of Dale and Roxanne Scully of Salisbury.
The program for pregnant and parenting teens is sponsored by the Adolescent and Family Enrichment Council. Funding is provided by Rowan County United Way and Smart Start Rowan.
Three major goals are to promote prenatal and postnatal care, prevent child abuse and neglect and encourage teen parents to continue their education beyond the high school level.
N.C. State dean’s list

To make the list, a student must earn an academic grade-point average of 3.25 or higher if they are carrying 15 or more hours of course work or a 3.5 grade-point average if they are carrying 12 to 14 hours.
