Students inducted
Eight students in Catawba College’s School of Evening and Graduate Studies Program were inducted into the college’s chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society during an April 16 ceremony in Tom Smith Auditorium on campus.
Catawba’s Beta Sigma Chi Chapter, the counterpart of Alpha Chi National Honor Society, is for adults enrolled in the College’s School of Evening and Graduate Studies. Catawba members must have earned a minimum of 24 graded semester hours in an undergraduate degree program with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Those inducted include local students Steven Darnell Cauble, Caroline Therese Kholos and Michael Porter, all of Salisbury; Mary Lynn Lince, Cooleemee; Anita K. McGowan, Mooresville; and Patricia Shirlene Queen, Lexington.
Officers installed
Catawba College’s Theta Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi education honor society installed new officers and co-officers for 2008-09 and inducted 17 new members in recent ceremony in the Tom Smith Auditorium on the campus.
New officers and co-officers installed are Brittany Burleson of Salisbury, president; Jennifer Layton of Bridgeton, N.J., vice-president; Kalin Collier of Rural Hall, secretary; Savanna Farris of Rockwell, treasurer; Melissa Powers of Bennett and Teresa Weddington of Salisbury, historians.
Outgoing officers are Amy Stokes, Salisbury, president, Andrew Howe, Salisbury, vice president; Kim Starnes, Mooresville, secretary; Amber Stanley, Salisbury, treasurer; and Cindy Waller, Salisbury, historian.
Local students inducted include undergraduates Brittany Burleson of Salisbury and Savanna Farris of Rockwell; post-baccalaureate Teacher Certification student and 2005 Catawba College graduate Brian Messenger, Kannapolis; graduate students Kimberly Miller and Pamela Rutherford of Salisbury and Amy Pruitt of Linwood; and graduating seniors, who also received honor cords, were Hillary Hampton, Alyssa Florida and Mary McBroom, all of Salisbury, Jonathan Kennedy of Mount Ulla, Debra Stanley of Mocksville, Glenda Weaver of Kannapolis, Ella Frazier (M.Ed.) of Linwood.
Also Henry Fairley of Salisbury, a graduating KDP member, received an honor cord.
Catawba Jr. Marshals
Thirteen students from Catawba College’s School of Evening and Graduate Studies were commissioned as Junior Marshals in an April 19 ceremony held in Tom Smith Auditorium.
Local students commissioned include Kristin Rene Beaver and Loraine A. Jones, China Grove; Jeffrey N. Bostian, Lexington; Tina Dale Carroll, Rockwell; Steven Darnell Cauble, Michael Wayne Croshaw and Kristy Lynn Lowder, Salisbury; Roger Vance MacLean, Mocksville; and Kristin McCullough Saine, Cleveland.
Patricia Shirlene Queen of Lexington, commissioned last year, will continue to serve this year.
Chosen from the junior class based on academic rank, the new junior marshals will represent the college in formal graduation week ceremonies.
CPA scholarship
Christina Gay Schmidt of Kannapolis has received a $700 scholarship from the Northwest Piedmont Chapter of the N.C. Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Schmidt, a student at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, will be honored by the chapter.
Carson band donation
The Jesse C. Carson High School Band has received $2,500 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation to purchase new equipment.
“We are thrilled that Food Lion has made a contribution to our program,” said Jeff Street, band director. “We are a growing program, and this will help us put instruments in kids’ hands.”
