Dole gives $3 million to re-election campaignBy Mike BakerAssociated Press RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ó Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole has committed $3 million of her own money to salvage a faltering re-election campaign.
Dole’s campaign said Tuesday that she transferred the money in the first week of October. Dole said earlier this month that she felt the need to “put some skin in the game” but had declined to disclose how much money she had provided.
Despite a lengthy resume that includes two stints as a White House cabinet member, Dole has struggled this year to counter Democratic attack ads portraying her as ineffective and tied to President Bush.
Democratic state Sen. Kay Hagan has surged forward from near obscurity to challenge Dole and make the race one of the closest in the country.
