Catawba Community Music performances
The Catawba College Community Music Program hosted several fall semester performance events for students enrolled in the program.
Established in 1984, Catawba Community Music was designed to provide a variety of quality musical experiences including private lessons, music classes, ensembles and performance opportunities to help students of all ages and abilities in Salisbury and the surrounding areas develop lifelong musical foundations and skills.
An integrated recital was held Sunday, Dec.14, in the Tom Smith Auditorium at Catawba College.
Students represented the piano studios of Community Music piano faculty members including Tina Brown and Erin Harper.
Other students represented the studios of Derek Daisey, guitar, and Dr. Daniel Skidmore, violin.
Students participating in the program included Amanda Hazard, John Dunham, Bebe Dunham, Kendall Welch, Barbara Glover, Berkley Loeblein, Dhasan Boler, Jeremy Geter, Grace Faller, Victoria Jones, Hannah Smith, Nathan Malnar, Kevin Sullivan, Grace Chamberlain, Katherine Rusher, Elena Turnbull, Jonathan Barbee, Callie Alexander, Nellie Brown, Daniel Engwall, Arnold Yu, Alex Reed, Laney Gokey, Gillian Morris, Taylor Morris, Jarvis Vinson, Benton Kribbs, Jake Murphy, Marshall Brady and Daniel Yu.
The Catawba Community Music Youth Wind Ensembles, directed by Debra Koontz and Dr. Steve Etters, presented a Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 14, at Catawba College.
Repertoire included various Christmas selections and other traditional repertoire.
Students in the beginner ensemble included Tori Mitchell, flute; Toby Cavalier, clarinet; Meredith Stanley, trumpet; Henderson Lentz, trombone; and Michael Stanley, trombone.
The intermediate level ensemble members included Eli Duncan, clarinet; Miyahka Farris, clarinet; Rafe Harrison, saxophone; Silas Moorefield, trumpet; David Weaver, trumpet; Mathhew Smith, trombone; Zachary Weaver, trombone; Chris Distin, percussion; and David Duncan, percussion.
The Catawba Children’s Choir was invited to perform on a Nov. 10 program hosted by Catawba College’s Center for the Environment featuring Lester Brown, founder of Worldwatch Institute and current founder and president of Earth Policy Institute.
The ensemble performed “Simple Gifts” and “Dance of the Willow” for more than 600 people who attended the special presentation.
To honor Catawba’s commitment to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (www.catawba.edu/climate), the Catawba College Community Music Program donated a willow tree to be planted on the campus of Catawba by the members of the Children’s Choir.
The Children’s Choir also participated in one of the most well-known and highly anticipated events in this region, the Annual Service of Lessons and Carols at Catawba College.
Because of the popularity of the event, two performances were provided for the community to attend on Dec. 2 and 4.
Directed by Randi Skaggs and accompanied by Dr. Julie Chamberlain, ensemble members include Chloe Burks, Elly Burks, Ann Fisher Lindsey, Grace Steinman, Anna Chamberlain, Grace Chamberlain, Kathryn Rusher, Kendra Key, William Clark, Madison Fuller, Katherine Paul, Kelsey Connor, Brian Engwall, Daniel Engwall, Christian Basinger, Madison Miller, Lacey Ceremony and MacKenzie Wagamon.
