Beginners beekeeping course scheduled by Cooperative Extension

A seven-week Beginners Beekeeping Course is scheduled to begin Feb. 13.

It will meet 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays at the N.C. Cooperative Extension’s Rowan County Center at 2727A Old Concord Road. It is sponsored by the Rowan County Beekeepers Association and the Extension Service.

The $20 cost includes tuition, handbook and 2007 Rowan County Beekeepers Association membership for new members.

A March 31 field day will follow the course, including optional certified testing from 9-11 a.m. and a hands-on demonstration from 1-4 p.m.

Arc/Rowan seminar

Rowan County District Court Judge Beth Dixon will speak about the youth baseball Challenger League at the January seminar sponsored by Arc/Rowan.

The seminar will be Jan. 23, a Tuesday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hurley Room of Rowan Public Library in downtown Salisbury.

The Challenger League is part of Rowan Little League and offers playing opportunities to youth 6 to 17 years old who have physical and/or developmental disabilities.

There is no cost to the participant, and players will receive a team hat and shirt. Dixon will talk about the way the league is organized, player buddies, number of innings and other details.

Anyone with questions concerning the seminar or who wants to attend should call the Arc/Rowan office at 704-637-1521. The seminar can be used for CEU credits for teachers.

Lifeguard classes

The Saleeby-Fisher YMCA, East Rowan Branch, is taking registration for lifeguarding classes to be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 9 p.m., from Feb. 27 through April 5.

Upon successful completion of the class, participants will receive certifications in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Lifeguarding.

Cost is $130. Registration can be done at the East Rowan YMCA at 790 Crescent Road Rockwell, or online at www.rowanymca.org.

Water to be turned off

KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis Water Department will replace a fire hydrant Friday at South East Avenue and East E Street, if weather permits.

To complete the replacement, water will be turned off six to eight hours for residents of South East Avenue and East E Street. Expected repair time is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

MS exercise class

The J.F. Hurley Family YMCA has started a Saturday MS Class providing physical conditioning for Rowan County residents with multiple sclerosis.

Planetarium show

Margaret C. Woodson Planetarium at Horizons Unlimited will show “Saving the Night” at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Parking is available off Lilly Avenue in the back of the building and at the front entrance on Parkview Circle.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. Admission is $2 per person over age 3.
