Staff report
Wheres theres smoke, there is no fire. There were a few phone calls to the Post and the Salisbury Fire Department Wednesday morning regarding smoke and the smell of fire in the area.
Salisbury Fire Capt. Marshall Moore said the smoke is coming from outside Rowan County.
He said the smoke is possibly coming from forest fires that continue to burn in southern Georgia and northern Florida.
According to the National Weather Services air quality forecast, there seems to be smoke coming from the southern region that is rising into the Carolinas. An hour-by-hour map shows the smoke dissipating by late Wednesday.
A message sent to area government officials and emergency responders by Emergency Services Director Frank Thomason says that until thecurrent weather pattern changes, the odor will remain in the area.
