Troop 401 holds Court of Honor and partyBoy Scout Troop 401, sponsored by Sacred Heart Catholic Church, held its annual pool party and Court of Honor June 3.
The following merit badges were presented:
Josh Brophy, American cultures, American heritage, computers, drafting, graphic arts; Justin Brophy, collections, dog care, pets, skating; Steven Burges, fingerprinting; Nick Cornacchione, citizenship in the world, fingerprinting; Matthew Gannon, citizenship in the world, coin collecting, family life, fingerprinting, wilderness survival;
Kyle Hartley, fingerprinting; Stephan Hartley, fingerprinting; Steven Lopez, family life; Dylan Maher, citizenship in the world, fingerprinting, geology, pets; Josh Pring, fingerprinting; Joe Rapp, citizenship in the world, collections, railroading, wilderness survival; Patrick Sullivan, art, backpacking, camping, citizenship in the community, emergency preparedness, environmental science, forestry, hiking, personal fitness, photography, public speaking, shotgun shooting; Albert Thayil, citizenship in the world, fingerprinting; Joshua Young, citizenship in the world, coin collecting, fingerprinting, nature, snow sports.
Ranks earned include Tenderfoot, Matt Gannon, Alex Habeeb, Kyle Hartley, Dylan Maher, Joe Rapp, Albert Thayil, Josh Young; First Class, Nick Cornacchione; Star, Cornacchione, Stephan Hartley.Matt Gannon received the Paul Bunyan Woodsman Award. Joe Rapp earned the Benjamin Franklin Historical Trail Medal, Presidents Trail Medal, Salisbury-Spencer Trail Medal, International Religious award, U.S. Heritage award.
In May, the Scouts completed a service project at the Rowan Wildlife Preserve on Majolica Road. They cleaned scrap logs off a trail, cleaned a stream and built up a bank. Those participating included Joe Rapp, Kurt Stebe, Patrick Sullivan and leaders Henry Fairley IV, Glenn Stebe and Tim Smith. Glenn and Kurt Stebe built a bridge on the nature trail at the preserve.
Kurt Stebe was recognized for becoming an Ordeal member of the Itibapishe Iti Hollo Order of the Arrow Lodge.
The Henry Fairley Award for Scout Excellence, established in 2006, went to Stebe and Josh Brophy. It recognizes Scouts who go beyond the call of duty and give unselfish service to the troop and contribute to the betterment of Scouting.
The James K. Deneaux Legacy Award went to James K. Deneaux and Tim Smith. It honors Deneaux, who was Scoutmaster from 1974-1988 and presented 12 Eagle Awards. It honors leaders who follow his example and go where no Scouting leader has gone before.
In 51 years, the troop has handed out 2,779 merit badges, elected 37 people to the Order of the Arrow Lodge, with 37 becoming Ordeal members, 9, Brotherhood; four Vigil Honor.

Pack 317 holds Pinewood Derby
Cub Scout Pack 317, sponsored by Christiania Lutheran Church, held its annual Pinewood Derby.
Robert Egloff came in first, with Colton Craven second, and Matt Fleming third.
The Scouts went to Raleigh on the train to visit the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences and the N.C. Museum of History. They went camping and hiking at Stone Mountain for their final trip of the spring.
At the spring banquet, the following second-year Webelos received their Arrow of Light and an authentic Native American arrow: Matt Fleming, Wyatt Blume, Robert Egloff, Kevin Mitchell, Luke Setzer, Bart Kelly, Lee Fritz, Charles Goff, Spencer Bost, Logan Cress, Collin Darnell, Davis Spencer, Connor Johnson, Bailey Mesimer and Cal Meyers. They also earned their readyman badge, pins for aquanaut, sportsman and scientist and compass points.
Perfect attendance awards went to Fleming and Egloff, five years; Cress and Colton Crave, four years; Mitchell and Andrew McCallum, two years; Carl Yost, Declan Wyatt, Noah Marshall, Seth Lomax, one year.
First-year Webelos Ryan Richard, Craven, Zac Neuhaus, Jimmy Ritchie, Colton Opal and Yost earned their God and Family pin. Craftsman pins went to Ritchie, Houston Peeler, Neuhaus, Opal, Benjamin Baker and Dontay Greene.
The following Wolves earned their Wolf Badge and gold and silver arrow points: Austin Vandezande, Chase Fritz, Trenton Frye, Brock Stewart, Jon Ritchie, John Rakowski, McCallum and Spencer Coughenour.
Tigers received their patches and elective beads: Jason Diliello, Trey Eastman, Hayden Setzer, Sebastion Ruff, Declan Wyatt, Marshall and Lomax. Samantha Marshall received a special award for assisting the Tigers and for completing all of the Tiger requirements.
