County commissioners approved conditional use permits Monday for two high-end gated communities on opposite ends of the county.
Construction at both developments is already under way. The permits allow developers to add new components.
MaKenzie Properties is developing the former Ernie Irvan property at the 9200 block of N.C. 152 West near the Iredell County line. MaKenzie is developing a 34-lot equestrian subdivision known as Finncastle on a 140-acre tract.
The conditional use permit will allow construction of an approximately 39,000-square-foot arena and an outdoor dressage arena of approximately 14,000 square feet.
The facilities will be used to board, show, train and possibly breed horses for the residents of the Finncastle subdivision.
The site will operate as a private facility and will not be open to the public.
Rowan County’s zoning ordinance requires a conditional use permit for recreational stables or arenas.
Commissioners also approved a permit for Sunset Pointe off the 6700 block of Goodman Lake Road.
The permit allows construction of 36 condominiums in six lakefront buildings.
Sunset Pointe is being developed by Dan Fisher and Associates. The development will have a marina, boat storage and restaurant.
In other matters, the board:
– Agreed to delay scheduling a public hearing on a new water point source requirement for subdivisions to allow commissioners to hear a presentation from the Planning Department.
That presentation will come at the Monday night session.
– Declared June 16 “Day of the Arts” in Rowan County.
The daylong celebration of arts will recognize arts organizations and artists. The proclamation will be read at the opening of Art on Easy Street on Saturday.
