Phillip Kirk, Catawba College’s vice president for external relations and chairman emeritus of the State Board of Education, is a member of a new Blue Ribbon Charter School Commission convened by the State Board of Education.
The commission is charged to look at the types of charter schools that have been successful, possible guidelines for approval of future charter schools and whether the cap on charter schools should be raised. It held its first meeting June 21 in Raleigh.
Charter schools are privately run, publicly funded schools that are allowed greater independence in their teaching methods. In 1996, the N.C. Charter Schools Act authorized the creation of a system of no more than 100 such schools in the state, all subject to the same testing and accountability standards as public schools.
Kirk, a 1967 Catawba alumnus, joined the college’s administrative team in July 2006.

Online BA degree
A new online degree in business administration will be offered this fall at Davidson County Community College. It is designed for the convenience of students who may work full time and need educational flexibility.
It is also the second online degree offered in the DCCC Applied Technology Division.
Online students may complete courses any time of day or night from any computer with access to the worldwide Web. They will have access to instructional support from the DCCC Business and Computer Coaching Center, just like their traditional student counterparts. While most of the program is completed online, students may need to visit the DCCC campus to complete some tests.
Students with demonstrated information technology experience and industry certifications may apply to take a challenge examination for some courses, and those with successful challenge examinations may be given course credit.
For more information, contact Ron Dougherty at 336-249-8186, ext. 6788, or ronaldd @davidsonccc.edu.
