St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church recently awarded $15,500 worth of scholarships to 18 students.
All scholarships are $1,000 a year, or $500 per semester except for those attending vocational or technical schools, who receive $500 a year, or $250 a semester.
First-time recipients are Hunter Barrier, Courtney Simmons, Jenna Trexler and Susan Waller, all graduates of East Rowan High School, and Alexander Byrd, a North Rowan High School graduate.
Barrier, son of Lonnie and Lisa Barrier of Salisbury, plans to study environmental engineering at N.C. State University in Raleigh. An A honor roll student at East Rowan, he was a member of the Junior Civitans, Future Farmers of America and National Honor Society. He was a Civitan Honor Scholar all four years of high school, a PTA Reflections winner and was voted Most Dedicated by his senior class.
Simmons, daughter of Kay and Phil Simmons of Salisbury, plans to major in accounting at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She managed East Rowan’s wrestling team for four years and was a member of the National Honor Society and Junior Civitan Club.
Trexler, daughter of James and Christina Trexler of Gold Hill, plans to major in education at N.C. State University in Raleigh. President of her senior class at East Rowan, she was a member of the Honors Chorus and National Honor Society, historian of the Junior Civitan Club, captain of the cheerleading squad and All County in chorus.
Waller plans to major in elementary education at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. She and husband Tony live in Salisbury.
Byrd, son of Julie and Jim Byrd of Salisbury, plans to major in biology and chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A junior marshal, he was executive treasurer of the Student Government Association at North Rowan his senior year and a member of Cavaliers for Christ and the National Honor Society. He participated in wrestling, baseball, cross country and football and was a Scholar Athlete in all those sports. He also participated in Summer Ventures in Science and Math and Teens Westward Bound.

– Susan Elizabeth Agner, daughter of Rodney and Linda Agner of Salisbury and a rising sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
– Charity Buie Cape, daughter of Randall Buie of Salisbury and Phyllis Buie of Gold Hill and a nursing major at Stanly Community College in Albemarle.
– Tiffany Buie Bame, daughter of Randall Buie of Salisbury and Phyllis Buie of Gold Hill and a rising junior at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she is majoring in social work.
– Ross S. Gagnon, son of Sharon and Paul Gagnon of Gold Hill and a rising junior biology/pre-dentistry major at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
– Kacie Mae Goodnight, daughter of Judy and Fidel Goodnight of Salisbury and a rising senior nursing major at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
– Jordan Huffman, daughter of Gary and Elaine Huffman of Salisbury and a N.C. Nurse Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she is a rising senior.
– Dylan Kyle Holshouser, son of Dawn Sticker and Phil Holshouser, both of Salisbury, and a rising sophomore computer information systems major at Appalachian State University in Boone.
– Sandra Burris Honeycutt, who lives in Salisbury with husband Javin and is pursuing an associate degree in dental hygiene at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
– Tara Ludwig, daughter of Donald and Beverly Ludwig of Salisbury and a communications major at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
– Billy Lyerly, son of Bobby and Ada Lyerly of Salisbury and a rising senior electronic engineering major at Norwich University.
– Anna R. Shepherd, daughter of Robert and Frances Shepherd of Salisbury and a rising senior at N.C. State University in Raleigh.
– Drew Christopher Waller, son of Tony and Susan Waller of Salisbury and a rising sophomore mechanical engineering major at N.C. State University in Raleigh.
– Alex Reid Williams, son of Dennis and Kelly Williams of Salisbury, who is studying welding and the machinist trade at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
