Staff Report
Rowan County Animal Control officials have confirmed the county’s ninth case of rabies this year.
Timothy Josey’s dog, Cujo, attacked and killed a rabid raccoon at Josey’s home in Richfield. Cujo, a boxer, was current on his rabies shots but Josey’s other dog, a young boxer named Casper, was not.
Casper had contact with Cujo immediately after he killed the raccoon, according to Animal Control.
The dead raccoon tested positive for rabies.
According to Animal Control, Josey has chosen to have Casper quarantined at Salisbury Animal Hospital. Casper will stay at that office for six months, in accordance with state law.
