Staff reportEmergency medical personnel responded to West Rowan High School Monday morning to revive an unresponsive female student.
The student’s name has not been released.
Initial reports indicated the student had a heart attack. However, Emergency Medical Services Manager Beth Connell said late Monday that she wouldn’t classify it as a heart attack without reviewing the student’s medical history.
“She was found unresponsive,” Connell said. She said that means the student was technically dead. “The school staff initiated CPR and our staff followed with the appropriate medical protocol.”
She said medical responders gave the student appropriate medications and took her to the hospital.
Capt. John Sifford of the Rowan Sheriff’s Office said investigators had “no information” on what caused the student’s medical problems.
Sifford said the student was taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
No other information was available Monday evening.
West Rowan Principal Jamie Durant did not return a telephone call.
