An Albemarle man escaped injury Monday afternoon when his car overturned in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. 601 North and Gheen Road.Timothy Stephens, 36, was headed north on U.S. 601 in a 1994 Toyota at 2:27 p.m. when the accident occurred, according to Trooper M. Eason of the N.C. Highway Patrol. “He was eating and driving,” Eason said, and apparently didn’t realize the 1997 Ford truck in front of him was slowing down to turn left onto Gheen Road.
When Stephens swerved to the left to try to avoid the vehicle being driven by Walter Smith, 64, of Hoot Circle, Eason said his car struck Smith’s truck on the left rear side and overturned.
“It looked worse than it really was,” the trooper said. “(Stephens) wasn’t injured at all, not even a scratch.”
He was, however, charged with failure to reduce speed.
