Scott Beaver lost what he called “sentimental junk” when a wood stove fire got out of hand Sunday evening and destroyed his storage shed.
Beaver, owner of Beaver’s Honda Auto Salvage and Body Shop, started the fire in a wood stove.
The shed is located behind his home and across the street from his business at 2060 Deal Road, in southern Rowan County.
Beaver said the shed contained a couple of old cars and some wood from a 100-year-old barn he was hoping to rebuild.
“I was building the fire about an hour ago,” Beaver said around 5:30 p.m.
When the fire got out of control, he grabbed a water hose and tried to douse the flames, but to no avail.
“I got the water hose and fought it for a few minutes,” Beaver said.
When he saw he couldn’t control the flames, he got everyone out of the house and called 911.
Beaver has been in business at that location for 35 years.Later in the night a hazardous materials team was called out to the site. The team worked for several hours to keep fuel from going into a nearby pond.
The following agencies assisted: Atwell, Enochville, West Rowan, South Iredell, China Grove and Landis fire departments. Rowan County Rescue Squad also participated.
