Charlotte Mecklenburg emergency services now reports 23 people with minor injuries and six with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
All lanes of southbound I-77 are now open, but officials recommend avoiding the area as Highway Patrol investigators reconstruct the accident.

About 20 students from Cox Mill Elementary School in Cabarrus County were injured this morning when their bus wrecked on I-77 near Brookshire Freeway in Charlotte.
Capt. Mark Basnight of the Charlotte Fire Department said none of the injuries appeared life-threatening. About 50 students were on the bus.
A report indicates 10 children were taken by stretcher to a mass casualty bus on the scene.
Ten others were being treated on the bus. Reports said some students walked from the wrecked bus with cuts or their arms in slings.
All southbound lanes of I-77 were closed and were expected to open around 11 but highway officials warn traffic backups could last well into the lunch hour. Traffic was backed up for more than 10 miles.
The bus was one of three from Cox mill that were taking students to Camp Thunderbird at Lake Wylie for an overnight trip. Students were fifth-graders and were accompanied by school staff and parents.
The cause of the wreck is unknown; the bus flipped on its side. Parents were told not to try to come to the wreck scene.
None of the injuries were thought to be serious. The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
Parents seeking information can call 704-336-2338. Parents were told to go to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Headquarters to check on their children.
