Two Lexington High School students face multiple charges related to a break-in of a school activity bus at Dan Nicholas Park Thursday afternoon.
David Gainey, 17, of 109 Maymead St., and Rashaun Raynard Siler, 17, of 100 Maymead St., Lexington, are charged with a felony count each of breaking and entering and seven counts each of larceny after breaking and entering.
Gainey is also charged with resisting and obstructing law enforcement officers.
The Lexington cross-country team was participating in a competition at the park.
Around 5:36 p.m. Thursday, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office received a call that someone had spotted two people stealing items from the bus.
Deputies responded and followed the trail of the fleeing suspects into the woods, eventually catching Siler and Gainey, who were identified by the witness.
With the help of a canine unit, deputies were able to locate the items taken from the bus, which included around $100 from various students, two cell phones, an MP3 player and two MP4s.
The total value of items taken was estimated at $385. The value of items recovered was put at $200.
Gainey was charged with obstruction because he initially gave deputies a false name.
Gainey’s bond was set at $5,000. Siler’s bond was set at $1,000.
