Nancy Mott is still excited about the news of being in the running for a new car through the Rowan County United Way car giveaway.
Mott, who works at Catawba College’s Development Office, learned her name was drawn Wednesday following a campaign report meeting.
Larry Farmer, Human Resources at Catawba College, saw Mott walking and told her of the news Wednesday afternoon.
Farmer is the Pacesetter Chair and he attended the report meeting.
Mott said she heard him tell her, but the news didn’t really sink in until later when she was having lunch with some friends.
“At first it didn’t register. then I realized what he was saying. It was like, ‘oh wow,’ ” Mott said.
Mott said she has isn’t usually lucky at winning anything. In fact, she attended a party where there were prizes given to everyone, but her.
Word has spread about the lucky draw throughout the Catawba College campus.
“I’ve been getting e-mails galore,” she said.
Mott recently bought a used car after the transmission blew up in the last one.
“I had to get one in a hurry,” Mott said.
Mott is even excited for the others whose names have been drawn.
“I’ll be excited for whoever wins,” she said.
She isn’t sure what she’ll do if her name is drawn as the final winner. She may keep the car or give it to someone.
“Last night I was thinking there are probably people who really need things more than I do,” she said.
Dennis Hill, a Salisbury neurologist at Central Carolina Neurology & Sleep, is planning to do the same thing if his name is called.
Hill’s name was drawn Wednesday. Hill thinks it’s great his name was chosen, but he won’t keep the car, if he wins.
He said his intention is to write the car back to the United Way.
“They can use the money. Whatever they need, I will do,” he said.
Hill has been a longtime supporter of the United Way. Each year he and his staff make contributions to the campaign.
“All of our employees give,” he said.
In 2001, Hill was campaign chair.
“There are so many needy people. Those of us who are privileged to have a job, it’s our duty to give to the less fortunate,” he said.
Hill said the only thing he’s ever won is a turkey.
“It’s nice, whatever happens, the United Way wins,” he said.
