MOORESVILLE ó Two Mooresville men died Thursday evening when their vehicle crashed into a tree on N.C. 801 and burst into flames.
Matthew Grady Benoist, 26, of 309 East Lawrence Ave., and Brett Stirling Lindabury, 31, of 328 Beaten Path Road, died instantly according to the report filed by Trooper M.J. Goudelock of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The investigation determined that Benoist was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer north on N.C. 801 around 8:44 p.m.
As he attempted to complete the pass and merge back into the northbound lane, he met an oncoming vehicle. Benoist lost control of the Ford Explorer, which went across the center line, then off the left side of the road and struck a tree.
The vehicle caught fire after the impact.
No other vehicles were involved.
