KANNAPOLIS ó Police detained two people Tuesday after finding a missing child in Davie County. One of the people being detained is the child’s mother.
Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, Kannapolis officers went to 364 Village Park Road to investigate a report of a missing child, a press release said.
The child was 18 months old and possibly in need of medical care. The child’s mother initially told officers the child was with the biological father. Police later determined that was not true but were then unable to locate the mother.
Officers determined the vehicle described in the initial report was a rental from Charlotte equipped with a GPS locator device. Officers contacted the rental company, which helped them track the vehicle from the Mooresville area into Statesville and then east onto Interstate 40.
Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped the vehicle just as it was entering Davie County. Kannapolis officers also responded and detained one man, who they took back to Kannapolis for questioning.
After locating the child’s mother in Concord, officers took her back to the Kannapolis Police Department for questioning.
The child was checked out at an area hospital and suffered no injuries during the incident, police said.
The Rowan County Department of Social Service is working with the Kannapolis Police Department in the investigation.
Police are still investigating the incident and conducting more interviews, the press release said.
