Staff report
Adam Muncy and Jeremy Eagle haven’t been at East Rowan High School in weeks but are in the thoughts and prayers of students and staff daily.
Muncy, 16, of Rockwell, was critically injured in a Christmas Day accident on Faith Road. He was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He remains at the hospital.
Eagle was riding a scooter Jan. 26 when he was injured in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Long Street and Bringle Ferry Road.
Eagle, 19, has since been at Carolinas Medical Center. A spokeswoman for the hospital said Monday that Eagle was apparently in the process of being moved and said no condition was available for him. She said he remained at the hospital.
A call to Eagle’s father, Shelton Eagle, was not returned.
East Rowan students launched a campaign to help the Eagle family. Students contributed $1,467 in cups put out around the school. A Faith store, A&L Mini-mart collected $93 in a three-day period and continues accepting donations.
“We’re so proud of our students, with the current economy. Kids are so giving,” Debbie Heilig, school secretary, said Monday.
Salisbury police said witnesses told them Eagle ran a stop sign the day of his accident. They said he was wearing a helmet, but still suffered head trauma.
He was taken by ambulance to Rowan Regional Medical Center, then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center.
He was initially listed in critical condition.
Police said Morris Keith Jones, 36, of 822 Brookmont Ave., Salisbury, was driving a 1998 Ford Expedition involved in the wreck with Eagle.
Muncy’s parents, Debbie and David Muncy, have been at the hospital almost day and night since his accident almost six weeks ago.
Friends are keeping updated on his condition through the Web site caringbridge.org, where family members post updates and friends comment.
According to information on the Web site, Adam Muncy remained unconscious until mid-January, when he began responding a little.
“We are very thankful for God’s mercy and care to Adam so far. He is slowly progressing. Thanks for keeping up with Adam on this site. It has amazed us how many people care,” the family wrote.
Progress has continued slowly.
Debbie Muncy wrote that the family took Adam in a wheelchair to the top of the hospital Sunday to get some fresh air. “It twas such a beautiful day and I believe Adam really enjoyed it,” she wrote.
Efforts to contact the Muncy family have been unsuccessful.
Nancy Barrow, a guidance counselor at East Rowan High School, said Monday the school system has an array of services available to help students and keep them from having to repeat a grade.
She noted the counselors work with students individually.
A third East Rowan student who was in an accident Dec. 10 is at home. Clinton Zimmerman, 18, of 359 E. Main St., Rockwell, is currently being home-schooled.
East Rowan students also raised $1,000 for the Zimmerman family.
Anyone wanting to assist the Zimmerman family may do so by sending checks with the notation, “For Clinton Zimmerman,” to Faith Baptist Church, P.O. Box 84, Faith, NC 28041.
Anyone wanting to assist the Eagle family may make donations at A&L Mini-Mart or send donations to East Rowan High School, 175 St. Luke Church, Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.
