Students and staff at Shady Brook Elementary School raised more than $1,000 for autism research. They took part in several projects to raise the money.
Staff took part in the Walk for Autism at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Oct. 10. Students, staff and parents also donated proceeds from the school’s monthly McTeachers’ Night fundraiser at McDonald’s to the autism cause.
In addition, the school held a Band Together for Autism fundraiser and sold colored bands for $1. All those funds also went toward the fight against autism.
As an incentive for raising money for autism research, staff members agreed to do crazy things for each $50 raised: wearing crazy hats, doing the chicken dance, wearing inside-out clothes, sporting crazy hair. And principal Dr. Rachel Zaionz agreed to get a pie in the face.
Shady Brook staff members who took part in the walk were Angie Beck, Ashley Stuart, Donna Gerdes, Debbie Moye, Brittany Pitts, Johna Hagan, Jody Shaughnessy, Barbara Fisher and Melissa Little.
