Recent layoffs have put many people a lot closer to foreclosure.
But the good news is there is help available for laid off workers who want to go to college and learn a new trade.
The N.C. General Assembly doubled the money available to pay mortgages while the homeowner is in school.
The Salisbury Community Development Corp. is already helping dozens of workers laid off from Freightliner, Hanesbrands, Jockey and Maxon.
“There’s plenty of money available =… no limit on the payment amount,” Lou Adkins, a housing counselor with the agency, said.
The mortgage payments come from a low interest loan with payments deferred.
Adkins said it’s a great opportunity and many people are interested in taking advantage of it.
Adkins said more of the people coming to the Community Development Ag-ency are those who aren’t yet in foreclosure, but are on the verge because of job losses.
The mortgage payment program is now available in all 100 counties.
